Moral of the Month: Perseverance

Morals of the Dojo
July: Respect
August: Perseverance
September: Integrity
October: Community
November: Gratitude
December: Discipline

When we walk the path of perseverance, we embrace the ability to overcome obstacles through consistent determination. Perseverance is the art of healthily navigating through obstacles and struggle and using those experiences as stepping stones to propel ourselves forward. Instead of shying away from difficulties, with perseverance, we face them head-on, growing from each trial and ultimately pushing beyond our perceived limits.

Through perseverance, we learn that it's okay to encounter disappointment, setbacks, and struggles. They are not to be avoided, but rather embraced as opportunities for growth. When we get through these moments, we emerge stronger, wiser, and more equipped to face life's challenges with courage and fortitude.

“Enthusiasm is common. Endurance is rare.”
—Angela Duckworth

In the dojo, students learn that to excel, they must confront one simple yet profound challenge – do the hard things. Whether it's mastering a complex movement, perfecting a technique, or enduring through rigorous training, each step forward demands tenacity. In doing so, students cultivate the spirit of resilience that serves them not only on the mats but in every other aspects of their lives.

Setting goals is an important first step. Acknowledging setbacks is also integral towards accomplishment, as is reflecting on progress and next steps. By encouraging ourselves and each other to strive for personal growth and to pursue important goals relentlessly, we create an atmosphere that celebrates the journey as much as the destination.

Perseverance isn't about achieving perfection or avoiding failure; rather, it's about embracing the imperfections and turning them into pathways for progress and growth. Persevering through challenges makes the accomplishment all the more rewarding because it was hard won.

Let us remember that behind every act of perseverance is something we are passionate about pursuing. With perseverance as our ally, we can face and conquer obstacles, and emerge as better versions of ourselves. By instilling the principles of perseverance, we are nurturing resilient individuals who understand the value of sitting through disappointment, embracing challenges, and pushing forward. As adults and families, we can learn from these principles, weave them into our lives, and inspire one another to overcome obstacles and achieve our dreams.
