Moral of the Month: Growth

“The tiny seed knew that in order to grow, it needed to be dropped in dirt,
covered with darkness, and struggle to reach the light.”
 –Sandra Kring

Growth is a lifelong process. Not only do we grow physically through childhood and adolescence, but we also develop mentally and emotionally through the years. We are capable of learning and improving through all ages and stages, and the trials that inevitably come along the way help us to become the best versions of ourselves.

Growth makes us more confident, capable and resilient individuals. It is what enables us to learn new things, develop our interests, and become better people. As we achieve milestones, overcomes obstacles, and learn, we also develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Growth brings fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment.

“In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening.
So rather than thinking, oh, I’m going to reveal my weaknesses,
you say, wow, here’s a chance to grow.”
–Carol S. Dweck

In order to grow, there must be change and challenges. In Martial Arts, growth takes many forms, like learning new techniques, improving physical fitness, consistently practicing dojo morals, and gaining confidence through activities like drills and sparring. Students who continue growing in these aspects, among others, will find themselves to be much improved versions of their past selves.

To maintain the path of growth, we can, for one, set goals for ourselves. Having goals gives us something to strive for and helps us to stay motivated. It is also essential to take risks and be open to new experiences. There may be times when we feel challenged, frustrated, or even scared, but stepping outside of our comfort zone is a great way to learn and grow. The more we experience, the more we learn.

We can also benefit from being comfortable asking for help. People who care about us will want to impart their knowledge and insight and help us progress. Finally, we should celebrate our successes. When we achieve our goals, it is important to rejoice in the wins and reflect on the steps it took to achieve them.

Growth is a journey, not a destination. It is not always easy, though as we grow, our gains and accomplishments pave the way for yet more progress that leads to our continual betterment. Growth is a process of learning and becoming more of who we are meant to be. Let's embrace it!
